Decaffeination Process
How are the teas decaffeinated?
Decaffeinated teas have been around for a long time. They come from the tea plant (camellia sinensis). These teas contain caffeine at the beginning. There are different methods of removing caffeine from the leaves. The traditional method of removing caffeine from tea (and coffee) has been to subject the tea to various chemicals. Methylene Chloride and Ethyl Acetate are two commonly used solvents used in the decaffeination process. Unfortunately, this process removes not only the caffeine but also leaves an unpleasant aftertaste.
Our teas are decaffeinated using the CO2 Process, which involves an organic solvent. The tea is circulated with the carbon dioxide and caffeine-free tea is the result. No unpleasent tastes or traces of the solvent remain in the tea. The tea retains most of its original flavour.
